How to Optimize the Performance of Windows XP Professional

- 1 Disable visual effects. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and click "Properties." Open the "Advanced" tab. Click "Properties" in the "Performance" window. Click the circle next to the "Adjust for best performance" option. Click "Apply," then "OK."
- 2 Turn on automatic updates. Click on the "Start" button. Click the "Control Panel" icon. Double-click on the "System" icon. Click the "Automatic (recommended)" option in the window that appears. Click "OK."

- 3 Check for disk errors. Click on the "My Computer" icon in the "Start" menu. Right-click on your hard drive. Click on "Properties." Open the Tools tab and click "Check Now." Check the boxes next to each option in the window. Click "Start."
- 4 Run Disk Cleanup. Click on the "My Computer" icon in the "Start" menu. Right-click on your hard drive. Click "Properties." Open the "General" tab and click "Disk Cleanup." Check the box next to each file selection and click "OK."
- 5 Defragment your hard drive. Open "My Computer" from the "Start" menu. Right-click on your hard drive and click "Properties." Open the "Tools" tab. Click "Defragment Now." Click "OK." Click on the hard drive in the Disk Defragmenter window. Click "Defragment."
